For job seekers
How to follow up after you apply for a job
You sent an application or emailed a recruiter, and nothing came back. A short follow-up email is normal and often expected. The hard part is timing: too early feels pushy, too late and the role is filled. This guide gives you a simple schedule, three templates you can copy, and an optional way to see whether your email got any activity.
When to follow up
- After applying by email: about one working week. If the posting names a closing date, wait until a few days after it.
- After an interview: a thank-you note the same or next day. Then follow up once the timeline they gave you has passed.
- After a first follow-up with no reply: one more note a week later, then move on.
These are common defaults, not rules. If the recruiter told you when to expect news, follow that date.
Template 1: follow-up after applying
Subject: Re: Application for [Role]
Hi [Name],
I applied for the [Role] position on [date] and wanted to check whether you need anything else from me. I’m still very interested, especially in [one specific thing about the team or product].
Thanks for your time,
[Your name]
Template 2: follow-up after an interview
Subject: Re: [Role] interview
Hi [Name],
Thanks again for the conversation on [day]. You mentioned you’d decide by [date], so I wanted to check in. If it helps, I’m happy to share [portfolio / references / a short work sample].
Best,
[Your name]
Template 3: last follow-up
Subject: Re: Application for [Role]
Hi [Name],
I know hiring gets busy, so this is my last note on the [Role] application. If the position is filled, no problem. I’d be glad to be considered for similar roles in the future.
All the best,
[Your name]
Reply in the same thread so the recruiter sees your original application. Keep it to three or four lines.
How email tracking helps with timing
With SentCue Email Tracking, an application you send from Gmail on a computer gets a small gray circle in your Sent folder. If the email gets activity, the circle turns blue and shows the time. That can help you decide when to follow up: a fresh signal after a quiet week is a reasonable moment to write.
A blue circle means that an activity signal was detected. It does not guarantee that the recipient read the message. Big companies often run email through security scanners, and some people block images, so treat a gray circle as “no information,” not as “ignored.”
You can also set a reminder in the extension’s History: “remind me in 7 days if there is no signal.” The reminder stays on your computer, so you don’t have to keep a spreadsheet of applications.
What it will not do
- It does not find recruiter email addresses on LinkedIn or anywhere else. You need the address first.
- It cannot track applications submitted through a careers portal or job board form. It only works on emails you send from Gmail on the web.
- It does not work in the Gmail app on your phone.
How to start
Add Email Tracking to Chrome, open Gmail on the web, and turn tracking on in the extension. Tracking stays off until you enable it, and you can turn it off for any single email. No SentCue account is needed.
