Gmail status circles

What does the blue circle in Gmail mean?

If you see a small blue circle next to a message in your Gmail Sent folder, it almost always comes from an email tracking extension installed in your browser, not from Gmail itself. Gmail’s own interface does not use a colored circle to report whether a sent message was opened. In SentCue Email Tracking, a blue circle means that an activity signal was detected for that email after you pressed Send.

Blue ring around your profile picture or the Gmail icon?

That is a different circle, and it has nothing to do with email tracking:

If the circle you see sits next to emails in your Sent folder on a computer, read on.

Blue, gray and orange in Sent

Hover over a blue circle to see when the first and the latest events were detected and how many there were. The same status appears in the extension’s History page, where you can search sent emails, mark them as follow-up needed, and set reminders.

What a blue circle does not prove

Keep in mind. A blue circle means an activity signal was detected; it does not guarantee that a person read the message.

The signal comes from an image being loaded. A mail provider’s image proxy, a corporate security scanner, or you opening your own copy in Sent can load that image too. Automated loads that SentCue can recognize are filtered, but no image-based email tracking tool can confirm that a human finished reading. Treat blue as “this email got attention”, not as a signed read receipt.

Why a circle can stay gray

I see a blue circle but did not install anything

Open chrome://extensions (or the extensions page of Edge, Brave or Opera) and look for an email tracking or sales extension. A work profile or a shared computer may have one installed. Recipients do not see these circles: they are drawn only in the sender’s browser, next to the sender’s own Sent messages.

How to turn the circles off

In SentCue Email Tracking, click the extension icon in the toolbar and switch activity detection off. You can also turn tracking off for a single email in the Gmail compose window before sending. Existing circles stay in your history until you delete it.

What to do when it turns blue

Blue is a good moment to follow up, especially for proposals, job applications and client emails. See when to follow up after a proposal and what to write when there is no response. If you are comparing this with Gmail’s own receipts, read Gmail read receipt vs activity signals.
